condition: good
make / manufacturer: ZENITH
model name / number: H664
FOR SALE TODAY is this beautiful 1951 Model H664 Zenith Cobra radio/phono which has been completely refurbished/restored by a professional electronics technician in the winter of 2024 to excellent working condition. The turntable was completely disassembled and cleaned and re-lubricated. The original drive wheel and idler were sent to West-Tech Services in Kent, Ohio in 2021 where they replaced the rubber using new synthetic materials to original specifications. The rubber parts should last forever. This phono has the original red colored Cobra Radionic Pickup. The Radionic Pickup features a stainless-steel vane, which is part of the field coil, and is spot welded to the osmium-iridium tipped stylus. The pickup/stylus is original to this unit, however, it shows very little wear and with proper set up they will last for an extremely long time. The red pickup is designed to play mono records; however, it seems to work fine on stereo records. All adjustments were made to factory specifications. This phono plays 16, 33, 45, and 78 rpm records. The stylus produces good sound and does not skip or get stuck if the grooves in the record are not compromised. This phonograph is a semi-automatic turntable. You can stack up to 10 records on the spindle and push the “record change” button and it will play them one at a time automatically. It does not have auto stop, so at the end of the last record, it will repeat the record until you move the tone arm off the record and move the record select lever to “Off”. Zenith never offered a large hole spindle adapter for standard 45 rpm records (so a small insert in each 45 record is necessary to play large hole records).
The Zenith Radio Corporation chassis, model 6H02, was also restored/reconditioned. All capacitors were replaced with new style components. The original 3 section main filter capacitor was replaced with a W8AOR capacitor circuit board assembly and new electrolytics were installed. All resistors were tested, and most were replaced with new components. This chassis uses 6 vacuum tubes: 12BE6, 6BJ6, 121T6, 50C5, 12J5, and 35W4. The 12J5 and 35W4 were replaced at some time in the past and they check very good. The other 4 were replaced with NOS tubes. All vacuum tubes are in excellent condition. All controls and switches were cleaned and lubed and they perform as new. The AM section of the radio was aligned and works great. The built-in antenna offers excellent AM reception. The amplifier section offers excellent sound from the radio or phono. The speaker is original and has not been replaced. The speaker had a small tear that was repaired with rubber cement. Again, the sound is very good. The dark brown Bakelite case was cleaned and polished as best as possible. It shows shiny and bright, however, there are some small blemishes and age spots. The round dial and all knobs are original. The overall cosmetic condition of this unit is good.
Overall, this beautiful Zenith Cobra radio/phono would offer a nice addition to any collection.
Available for inspection at Wellsville Antique Mall, 601 Main Street, Wellsville, KS 66092. Email any questions.
